Veteran’s Day Coloring Sheet

Veteran’s Day is tomorrow, November 11th, this year.  Over the years, I have tried to explain the importance of those who have served Our Country to my little ones.  It certainly is not an easy conversation, so this year, I searched for some ideas and ran across this amazing article on some ways that you can have this conversation and engage your kids.  Check out this link on “Teaching Kids About Veteran’s Day” found here on FantasticFunandLearning.com.  It’s Full of Ideas and Books that will make it both fun and interesting.

In Honor of Our Veteran’s  – Let’s Celebrate all that they do for our Country with this “Veteran’s Day” Coloring Sheet.

Our 2015 Fall Home Tour

Welcome to Our 2015 Fall Home Tour - stage-presents.com

Come on In, and Welcome to Our 2015 Fall  Home Tour. It’s no big secret that I love fall.  I enjoy decorating my home for the season almost as much.  The Traditional Fall Color Palette truly speaks to my spirit, each and every year.  It has become a more fulfilling experience now that I have enlisted the help of my dear husband.  This year more than any other, he was an active participant in the vision behind Our Fall Home.

This little table sits in our Front Foyer.  It changes with the seasons.  I kept it very simple, and added One of Our Fall Printables from Our Etsy Store.

2015 Fall Home Tour - Centerpiece for Formal Living Room - stage-presents.com

If this isn’t your first time viewing one of Our Home Tours, then you know that these White Hydrangeas are always somewhere in sight.  I simply added them to a basket with orange blooms, a few pumpkins and some candles to welcome fall.  This served as the centerpiece for the coffee table in Our Formal Living Room.

Our Formal Living Room and Dining Room feed into each other, as you can see here.  You know, the “crowning glory” of my decorated home is always my tablescape.  This year I was stumped, I really didn’t know what to do and I knew I wanted a change.  So I sent my hubby on a Home Goods Excursion.  He came back with a lot of really Good Stuff.  Thank God for his fresh eyes.

My favorite piece of this year’s Tablescape, is the Festive Pumpkin Wheelbarrow.  I was swooning , the minute he pulled it out the bag.

2015 Fall Home Tour - Fall Side Buffet - stage-presents.com

I am always searching for inspiration on decorating my side buffet.  I wanted the buffet to be full and for the decor to vary in height and texture.  I am very rarely pleased with my first or second look.  That was true here as well.  I won’t even show you the epic fails.  But, we finally settled on this look, and  This year’s Side Buffet is EVERYTHANG!!  Or at least we think so.  We sat the Moscow Copper Mule Mugs(an early Christmas present), on saved slices of last year’s Christmas tree.  We planned to make them into coasters, but that is still on the DIY List. Luckily for us it lent to the rustic look and feel that we were going for.  The Orange bird cages have been around for a few years, but still fit in perfectly.  The larger than life Acorn and Fabric Pumpkin were Home Good Finds.  Throw in some Fall Garland and an Orange Cake Plate and the look was complete.

I had hoped to post the Fall Home Tour earlier, but… well… if I must confess, the kitchen is the hardest part of my home to keep “picture perfect”.  I am sure you know that…. these pictures are not indicative of every day.

As always, it was great fun inviting you all into Our Home.  Do you decorate for each season?  What was your favorite part of Our Home Tour?

Mixing Things Up One Pot at a Time – Sausage Pasta Skillet

I have clearly been on a Sausage Kick, since this is the second recipe in less than two weeks that I have posted where the main ingredient was sausage.  But, in my defense, it’s a break from the norm.  The protein portion of our dinner pretty much always consists of Chicken, Beef, or Fish, and that is it.  It doesn’t hurt to mix things up every once in a while.

Quick and Easy One Pot Meal - Sausage Pasta Skillet

In keeping with my rules for trying a new recipe, this one was once again, Quick and Easy with minimal ingredients that were not already in the pantry.  This actually came about because I bought more sausage for the Sausage and Peppers, than I needed.  So I needed to figure out something to do with what was left, and I found this recipe for the Sausage Pasta Skillet here on HweScott.blogspot.com.  As important as reading through the recipe, for me, is reading the reviews.  And, this one had great reviews that included a lot of awesome tips to make this recipe that much better. (follow the link to read the reviews)

Spicy Sausage Pasta Skillet
via Plain Chicken

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 14 oz smoked sausage, sliced into 1/4″ rounds
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 (10 oz) can rotel (I prefer mild, but if you want more spice use the original)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 8 oz whole grain penne (or whatever noodle you prefer, I’ve also used bowtie)
  • Pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/4 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • thinly sliced scallions, for garnish

Heat oil over medium-high heat in an oven safe skillet until hot.  Add the sausage and onion and cook until lightly browned, 4-5 minutes.  Add in the garlic and cook until fragrant, 30 seconds.

Add the broth, rotel, heavy cream, uncooked pasta, and pepper.  Stir well.  Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to medium-low.  Simmer until the pasta is tender, 15 minutes.  Stir once or twice while cooking.  Preheat the broiler while pasta is cooking.

Remove the skillet from the heat, stir in 1 cup of the cheese. Taste, and add salt as needed. Top with the scallions and remaining cheese.  Broil until the cheese is melted and lightly browned – about 3 minutes.

Tastes great as leftovers the next day, too.. if you have any.  😉

Here are my Notes on this Recipe:  Make sure that you use the recommended amount of Chicken Broth. It may seem like it is a lot but, in order to get your pasta to the desired consistency this is a must.  I used the original Rotel.  I thought it was fine but the kids thought it was too spicy.  They ate it, but with a lot of… drama.  (“We need water, lol”.)  Heavy Cream is the same as Heavy Whipping Cream who knew.  I used the recommended 1/2 a cup of heavy cream, but I could have used some more just to make it creamier.  I used one package of Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage and I would recommend using 2 packages. I used a whole box of penne pasta, and there were a lot of left overs, after my family of four was done.  Over all it was a very tasty dish, maybe more suited for an adult meal, but I feel like with the small changes I listed above the kids would enjoy it as well.   I plan to try this again, and will share the results from the second time around.

What are your favorite go to recipes this time of year?  If you add this one into the rotation, please share your thoughts.

A New Family Favorite – Smoked Sausage and Peppers

If you are like this Mom, every now and then you get tired of cooking and eating the same things over and over again.  Actually…. that happens pretty often.  But, when I ask the family for suggestions… I get NOTHING, which is probably why I have developed such an unhealthy attachment to Pinterest. (That’s my story and I am sticking to it.)

So yesterday around 2pm, I started searching Pinterest for some dinner ideas… And, at about 3pm, I emailed my hubby and told him I wanted to make Smoked Sausage and Peppers..  and askedwhat did he think.  To which he enthusiastically replied… SURE… (That was sarcasm, in case you didn’t pick it up.)
I second guessed myself all the way from work to the grocery store and then back to the house.  The girls are picky eaters .. what if it didn’t come out right.. what should I serve with it.. blah blah, blah.  Then when I got home I suggested to my dh that maybe we should have something else.  Yes, I was punking out.  Thankfully, he pushed me to go with my original plan.
And, what happened next was pure magic.  lol.   Thirty minutes later we had an amazing meal.  And, everyone approved.  So now we have one more Forever Dinner to put into the arsenal.  Forever Dinners mean meals that everyone will eat without any complaints.

Keeping Up with the Changing Tides

Keeping up With the Changing Tides - Returning to the Work Force

As most of my regular readers know, I have been home with my babies for the past three years.  I swear it doesn’t seem that long.  In August, the little one started Kindergarten, and I wasn’t sure what I would do with all my free time.  I decided that I would use this extra time to figure out a way to really monetize my blog and increase my Social Media presence for my Etsy Shop.  And, if you have ever done this or if you are in the process of doing that you know  … it is no easy feat.  I had my plan and I was working my way down my list.  Add more items to the Shop, Increase the Number of Daily Posts for Twitter and Instagram. Clean up My SEO on older posts, Re-write my About Me Page.  Just to give you the general idea.

Fast forward three weeks and I get a call from the School System where I used to work at, asking if I was interested in being a sub for a few days.   I wasn’t sure honestly what to think of it.  I was not sure if I would be able to keep up with the blog and my Social Media postings.  (More on that in another blog to post later this week.) But, I knew that it would be a way to stack away some extra money for Christmas.  Two days turned into one week and then two.  Turns out I forgot more than I thought about the balancing act that comes with being in the office all day and then having to come home to Job #2 (Mommy).  If it sounds like I am complaining honestly, I am not.  I was super grateful for the opportunity.  I just had to readjust thankfully on a learning curve.

Lucky for me,  I have a pretty amazing husband, who never misses a beat.  I have to be to work by 7:30,  which means Dad had to be on duty for the drop off and lunch detail.  I tried the first couple of days to make the lunches the night before, but that was short lived.  I get off at 3:45, which means I was leaving the office just as the girls were getting off the school bus.  So by the time I got home they had been there for about a half an hour.   It is a little harder to extract details about their day, but I pulled it out of them.  On their news front, baby girl was the line leader, and our oldest daughter, is loving Math right now.

When I get in the house, I have about 30 minutes to unwind and then its homework time.  I am normally wrapped up in that for a good hour.  Then its time to make dinner.  On a good day I can cook and get out of the kitchen by 7:30.  And, then its TV time.. bed time.. and prep for the next day.

When I was a full time working mom, I couldn’t  imagine how full time stay at home mom’s filled their days and after being at work for a couple of days, I cant imagine how working mom’s balance it all.  its a catch 22.  I guess the point of it is all is that, no matter where you fall on the spectrum the Mom Job is no joke and we adjust as needed to make it work.

My Product Review of the Rubbermaid LunchBlox

I was both excited and nervous about my baby girl heading off to Kindergarten.  There are way too many reasons to name.  But, 1 BIG reason was that she has numerous food allergies, and can never be without her EpiPen.  We have known about all of her allergies for years, and she knows what she can and can not eat.  But, I couldn’t help but worry about her eating something that was on her NO GO List.  In addition to that she is a Picky Picky Eater.  As any parent who has a picky eater knows, having a child with these kind of issues can make things difficult, and, can turn you into a short order cook.  There is very rarely anything that she always loves and she tires of food easily.

So of course, my first thought was what am I going to feed her.  I went to favorite spot for ideas.  You guessed it Pinterest using this Search. I knew that she needed variety,  just to ensure that she was eating enough to be productive during the school day. My next thought was the Bento Box (pictured here).  There were so many different kinds to choose from, and  many different price ranges too.  I had pretty much settled on them.

But, then ….  on my weekly Grocery Shopping Trip, I ran across the Rubbermaid LunchBlox for Tall Lunch Bags.  This set up was perfect for us because of the the Tall Hello Kitty Lunch Bag, that we had already purchase for our little one.  And…. it happened to be on SALE, another plus.  We started trying it out, the week before school started just to see what could fit in it.  Since she most likely would not be eating the school lunch for fear of an allergy mix up, I wanted to make sure that her lunch would be something that she would enjoy.  I did not want her to feel like she was missing out.

My Rubbermaid Lunch Blox Product Review - Mom and Kindergarten Approved

First, I wanted to make sure that she could open it by herself. ☑

Second, I wanted to make sure that we could keep her fruits, veggies and drinks cold.☑

Third, I wanted to make sure that the ice pack that came with the bag wouldn’t melt through out the day and make a mess. ☑

The Rubbermaid LunchBlox passed all my tests, plus it’s Microwave Safe, Dishwasher Safe, Freezer Safe and BPA Free, as listed on their website here.

It’s no Easy Feat to please this Mommy.  So this product gets the Stage Present’s Stamp of Approval.Stage Presents Stamp of Approval - For Products We Review

Conquering Day One – First Day of School 2015-2016

Conquering Day One - First Day of School - How to Talk to Your Kids About School - stage-presents.com

You would think that as a VETERAN PARENT, (meaning I have a 19 year old son), that the First Day of School wouldn’t be so daunting for me.  But, every year I get anxiety and don’t get much sleep for the days leading up to it.  This year was probably a little worst than the past years, because it was my baby’s First Day of Kindergarten.   I kept watching her all morning to see signs of fear, but it wasn’t until we were already in the classroom that she showed her hand.  I could see the tears right on the brink, and as I put my hand on her little chest in an attempt to calm her, I could feel her heart beating soo fast.   For a moment, I wanted to grab her hand and run down the length of the hallway, throw her in the car and take her home with me, where I knew she would be safe.  But, I steadied myself and diverted my eyes, so as not to burst into tears myself.  Lucky for me, hubby took the day off to go with, and he was his usual Cool as a Cucumber self.  After I dropped her off,  I walked my oldest daughter to her fifth grade class with her supplies.  Shes an old pro, so she was fine.  Then, I immediately doubled back to check on baby girl, and even though she was a bit withdrawn and quiet, she was ok.  The hours seemed to creep by today.  I kept looking at my phone and my watch, even though I am not sure why.  She made it through the day, and rode the bus home with her sister, as if she had been doing this all her life.   So, I suppose all is well that ends well.  There’s something about your last baby.  It makes the firsts also the lasts, and, I suppose that can be a little somber.  Now, that we have gotten past that part, I pray that the girls both have an amazing year, and wish the same for you and your little people.  Let’s Get It!!

First Day of School Instagram Printables

Capture the Memories with this Free Instagram Back to School Printable

In our house, the first day of school is a big deal.  So each year I try to come up with fun ways to commemorate the end of summer and kick off the school year.  As the kids get older, it gets harder to come up with new and innovative things we can do together and enjoy.   But lucky for me, my girls share in my love of Scrap booking and Creating Photo Books.   My kids enjoy scrolling through my Instagram Feed, but they are too young to have a page of their own.  So, I came up with this fun Instagram Printable that I knew they would love.  It was something that they could “make their own”  by adding their own words and choosing a picture and then we could add it to our Yearly Family Photo Book.  You can read more about this here.

Since we enjoyed it so much, I thought I would share Our Free Editable Instagram First Day of School Printable with all you Scrap booking and Shutterbug Moms, or anyone who just wants a keepsake to remember this Special Day.  And, the best part is that you don’t need any fancy Photo Editing Software, you can edit it in Microsoft Word.  But, feel free to edit it in ANY Software you choose.

The Liberty Bell     Home of the Brave     Happy Independence Day

ORIGINS OF THE FOURTH OF JULY SOURCE: HISTORY.COM

The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence.

Fourth of July Becomes a National Holiday

The tradition of patriotic celebration became even more widespread after the War of 1812, in which the United States again faced Great Britain. In 1870, the U.S. Congress made July 4th a federal holiday; in 1941, the provision was expanded to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees.

Over the years, the political importance of the holiday would decline, but Independence Day remained an important national holiday and a symbol of patriotism.

Falling in mid-summer, the Fourth of July has since the late 19th century become a major focus of leisure activities and a common occasion for family get-togethers, often involving fireworks and outdoor barbecues. The most common symbol of the holiday is the American flag, and a common musical accompaniment is “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the national anthem of the United
