What’s on your Soundtrack?

1What’s on The Soundtrack to your life? For as long as I can remember, even as a little child music has literally carried me from one stage of my life to the next. It has helped me to grieve, heal and even triumph. Sometimes I feel like it was even God’s way of speaking to me, when I refused to hear his voice any other way.

When my now nine year old started school we employed a “Theme Song”, of sorts, I read that it would help transition her into her day. And, it did, even on days when she didn’t feel like going to school. It seemed to calm her spirit.  Now, at nine, she has a love for music that parallels my own.

Some mornings when I need a little more than my beloved cup of coffee to start my day, I need a little Earth Wind and Fire to get me in gear.

Or when I need some motivation for the day  I need a little Go Get It by Mary Mary

And, when I need some help to get moving while Exercising… I still love Upgrade Me by Beyonce…

What songs move you like no other??

Does Reality Mirror the Dream??

Nothing that anyone says, Mom included, prepares you for family life.

We all watched those scenes in “Brown Sugar”, one of my favorite Urban Classics, where Nicole Ari Parker and Taye Diggs work around each other in the kitchen with their perfectly coiffed hair and custom made suits as they head off to their perfect jobs in their perfect worlds.  And, even though that was a close to perfection as they got in that movie.   I remember looking forward to making my hubby breakfast, and also to being served breakfast in bed.  And, even though we had our share of Just the Two of Us moments, fast forward 5 years and the landscape of our lives have changed immensely. [To be fair — they had no children.]

That huge bathroom with the garden tub, that was oh so “spa like”,  is now reminiscent of a scene out of Romper Room.  I mean, duh, everyone knows that a Garden Tub is the ideal place to give your little one’s a bath.  The Perfect Master Bedroom with the sitting room, has become the Master Bedroom with my Pseudo Office, as well as my Toddler’s new Abode, where her Toddler Bed has made its permanent home. [Mind you, home girl has the biggest bedroom in the house outside of ours, with all her own perfect furniture, and walk in closet.]

The Dining Room Set that I dreamed of sits proudly in my Dining Room, set to “NINES”, and no one ever eats there, except on Holidays and Special Occasions.  And, sometimes, shhh…. don’t tell anyone it has fabric on it.(hey, it makes a perfect stage for Instagram Pics, lol).

The Formal Living Room with my white leather couch, that no one sits on.  Has become the backdrop for all the pillows in our Etsy Store.  As well as a Pillow Warehouse, who knew the room could have so many uses.

The most frequented rooms in the house aside from our bedrooms are the Family Room and the Kitchen.  I guess that’s a good thing, since when we are in those rooms we are generally all together…

So does the Reality in any way Mirror the Dream… not even a little bit.  That being said, would I change a thing?  As a matter of fact, I would,  I have a constant laundry list of things (running in my head) of things I would change and do this way or that.  But, the fact of the matter  is that we are immensely blessed.   Could I use Weekly Date Nights? Yep. Could I use a Full Time Cook, who could make Diabetes Friendly Three Course Meals?  Yep. Could I use more Spa Days, and time with my girls(not the little ones), sure who couldn’t but…..

C’est La Vie!!

I walk the line…

As a Mom and even as a wife, there is definitely a line of demarcation in the sand.   You want your family to be independent, but you also want them to need you. You want your children to be able to enjoy their childhoods as much as is possible, but you also want to teach them a sense of responsibility and accountability.  What falls into the arena of things that they should be responsible for and what are things that I should be responsible for?  And, like most things that come with raising kids, there is no manual.  We are left mostly to our own devices.

With my oldest, I held his hand way longer than I should have probably.  But, I blame that on the fact that he was an only child for almost 9 years.  Rounding the second trimester of my second pregnancy, I realized that I couldn’t possible take on the responsibility of being a new Mom, and continue to hold his hand too.  So, we went through a crash course on things he could do himself.  To my surprise, and probably my relief, he already could do most of the things that I had been doing for him, but wasn’t, simply because I was doing it.

Fast forward 9 more years, and that little baby I was pregnant with is now 9 years old.  And, I find myself in a similar predicament.  Except there are other existing variables.  1.  I have a 4 year old, who I think was born independent. 2. My oldest daughter has an significant speech delay   Because she had such a challenging road ahead of her, I again I did most of the things that she should have started doing earlier.

But, now that we are coming up on the other side of her circumstances, I find that we are constantly having to remind her to do things, she should know how to do already.  I even think she has gone backwards a bit, because Mom always swooped in and saved the day.

I know.. I know.. Bad Mommy. Hubby and I have had to stay on both girls to make sure that they keep their rooms cleaned, do their chores, don’t leave their things all over the house, etc., etc.

All of this had me thinking about exactly what kind of children I want to raise. So, I started doing some research talking to other Mothers that I admire, Mothers whose children have succeeded in life and excelled, and even Mothers who gave their all and had their kids go left instead of right.  I was shocked at what I learned, or at the very least humbled.  Over the next couple of weeks, I will share those findings, books, printables, and conversations that I have had. Hope you all will let me know what you think of my findings, what wisdom you want to impart to your own kids, and what worked for you, and even what didn’t.

April Goings On…

April is always a particularly busy month for me.  But, more of a Fun Busy than a BUSY BUSY.  Well this year, it has been a combination of both, and I can not complain about either.  April is my birth month, and the month that I married my dh.  In addition to that, my God Daughter’s Birthday is in April as well. So, I happily squeeze a lot into this month.

This year, after launching our Etsy Store in February, we have been particularly busy with Custom Orders and trying to increase our inventory. But, Like I said even though its been a “BUSY BUSY”,  I can’t complain.

Working for yourself, as opposed to working for a business or corporation is a HUGE change.  And, dare I say, requires a little bit more discipline than one might think.  Especially with Marketing and Social Media being like they are today.  But, I am truly enjoying it.  There’s something about creating a plan and seeing the pieces slowly fall into place, that is both fulfilling and exhilarating. And, sometimes a little frustrating, but, its your vision and your dream, as opposed to you being a team player executing someone else’s plan.

And, having a hubby who supports my ambitions and contributes to it, just makes it all the better. So, in short, I guess that is my apology for being a ghost in the blog-o-sphere this month.  And, yes I made that word up.

I just wanted to drop in and share with you all some of the Lovely things going on in my world.

Right now, we are getting more requests for custom orders than anything else, so we have been playing around with the custom fabrics, packaging and branding.

We are also adding some Teen/Tween Friendly Hipster Pillows to the Shop.  Even I, am crushing on these pillows to hit the Etsy Store in the next week.

Lastly, I finally finished my “Oh So Simple”, but cute Easter Table Centerpiece, literally the day before Easter.

So, I am off to enjoy my Birthday Weekend!!

J’Adore 8

I think I am part of the “Energy Crisis”.  I have been soo sleepy lately.  I am hoping that since this week is Spring Break and hubby is off, I will be able to sleep in some days and maybe even score some day time naps.  [Scoffs!!]

That being said, right now…

Now, that I am done decorating my Spring Table:

and added a pop of color to the kitchen window sill with my colorful chalkboard planters and fresh herbs.

and put up my re-purposed spring wreath.

The only thing I have left is to decide on is planters for the front door and whether or not I am doing just greenery or flowers.

In my search, I ran across this – 100+ Spring Planters.  Soo many choices, so little time.  Also, living in Georgia, I tend to want flowers and greenery that deter mosquitoes.  I only recently realized that this was an option.  Which is a good thing because the mosquitoes love me and the kids. Ugh!!

And, yes I am still obsessing over Easter Egg Decor Design.   Check out these links here and here.

I think I am going to cheat and work on the Easter Eggs with the kids this week, over Spring Break.

Finally, here are some cute Easter Printables.

Hope you all have a great week!!

J’adore 7/8: Double Edition

Stomach Flu had me out for the count last week, so I tried to make up for it, with a Double Edition this week.  Hope you enjoy!!

I was a little thrown off my game this year, with Easter being so far into April. But, at least it gave me more time to make Easter Memorable.  I am really feeling these non-traditional ideas for Decorating Eggs  – Glitter Eggs and these Chalkboard Eggs.  Haven’t decided which one I like more, or if these Qualify as a Mommy Project or a Mommy and the Girls Project.  After all they have their PAAS Egg Decorating Sets, lol.

The change of Season is inspiring Color Everywhere.  Elle Decor recently shared their Spring 2014 Color Trends, along with their ideas of how to Design and Decorate using these hues.   My favorite colors from their list were PANTONE 16-3823 Violet Tulip and PANTONE 18-3949 Dazzing Blue.  In fact, I am trying to incorporate the Blue into my Easter Tablescape.  I will let you know how that turns out.  It doesn’t seem to be an easy color to find and or match with my existing dinnerware.

With my birthday approaching, I have been bouncing around ideas of getting together with my girlfriends.  Trying to figure out if I wanted to do a full blown dinner party, go out to eat, or do some type of wine/cheese tasting party. That is when I ran across this, and had to chuckle.  Have you ever had these kind of days?

I know I shared the link, but I had to share the pic in this actual post(priceless).

This past year my nine year old had a LOT of Dental Work done.  She had adult teeth that came in behind the baby teeth and it took a lot to get everything where it should be.  Super Painful too, so this year, I am shying away from anything that could put my baby back in that dentist chair, other than a cleaning.  I am looking for NON CANDY Easter Basket Options.  I guess I am not the only one, I found a lot of great ideas here and here.

Lastly, someone mentioned to me this week that a lot of people want to use Pillows to decorate, but are unsure about Pillow Placement.  So here is some “Pillow Porn” for you. Hope that didn’t offend anyone…

Did this help you think of a place you could put a Throw Pillow?  Head on over to our Etsy Store for some options!!

Next week, I will be sharing some Great Easter Crafts… Until then, AS YOU WERE!!

Here’s a little something you may or may not know about me.  I LOVE STRONG COFFEE.   Of course, I also love Great Creamers.  But, I have grown accustomed to needing the little kick in the morning.  I could really drink more than one cup a day, but I try to limit myself to just one.  Do you know what your coffee says about you?  Well, I didn’t.  I drink Macchiatos and I am also a COFFEE ON THE GO girl, not sure I agreed with their analysis of me.  But, it made for an interesting read.

Since opening our Etsy Store, our house is starting to look more and more like a sweat shop.  We have fabric, scraps, zippers, metal snaps, tools, needles… etc. EVERY where.  So I have been searching for a way to organize all my supplies. The first thing I need to find storage for is the fabric, and since I have a fairly large and deep Foyer Closet, this solution seemed perfect for me. Buttons, Thumb Tacks, Embellishments, all tend to be SMALL.  And, with little ones running around, you can imagine what a disaster that could become.  Here are some Solution Ideas:  Spice Racks and Mason Jars.

My nieces are being christened this weekend.  The dresses that I bought for them to wear to the Christening, are the dresses they will be wearing for Easter. So, I am thankful I got that out the way, before the Easter Mall Rush. Now, I am trying to figure out what fun things we can do together for Easter.  I ran across these PAAS Easter Egg Color Kits in Walgreens the other day.  It took me back to when I was little and my Mom used to buy these for my sister and I. So nostalgia took over and I bought them for the girls.  I am looking forward to making those memories with my little ones.  Since, I am trying to cut down on the sugar, instead of doing all chocolate covered eggs, I decided that I am going to make these for the girls, with my own twist.  And, I am still on the hunt for a local Easter Egg Hunt or Carnival.  What do you do with your kids during the Easter Season?

The Dust Up In the Family Room!!

Can you play two ends of the same coin?  I like to say that I push the envelope when it comes to my Home Decor Choices, but more often than not, my choice ends up being very main stream and even a bit conservative but with a contemporary flair.

Last year we decided it was time to update our Family Room. And, our jumping off point was the sofa.  I never anticipated the mayhem that would ensue.  After numerous trips to the furniture store.  We decided on this sofa.

photo (6)

Or so I thought.  We didn’t really measure the space.  And (maybe), since I’m not sure even after a year, that I am ready to acquiesce that it was too big for the room, it was a bit large.  But, I loved that sofa.  So for peace sake the sofa went back and hubby was tasked with finding a new sofa for the family room.  I was still pouting, so I stayed at home.

So you can imagine my horror and surprise when hubby came home with a red leather sectional.

Little did I know that [1] I would fall in love it.  [2] It was the perfect match for our space.  [3]  It would inspire such creativity on our part(our Mantel Decor- shown above).

It is easy to pick safe choices, but I must admit that” flying a little close to the sun” worked for us, this time.
